EU EBIKE LAWS
The EU lawmakers must have reached the same conclusions since they imposed stringent rules on bike manufacturers that wanted to sell their products in the EU.
The legal restrictions on e-bikes have drawn criticism for being too lax, but the EU parliament opted to only set them up as a framework. If they determine that greater limits are necessary, the national lawmakers might impose them.
For the time being, all member states must abide by EU Directive 2002/24/EC. This regulation states that an e-bike must have a motor that continually outputs no more than 250W in order to be exempt from registration and license requirements.
Furthermore, when the bike’s speed rises to 25kph, this output should be gradually decreased. At this pace, the engine entirely stops providing assistance, leaving your legs to carry the weight. Moreover, unlike many rear and front hub motors, the e-bike motor shouldn’t be able to operate independently.
– So, in order for an e-bike to be permitted in the EU, it must:
- have a motor with a maximum continuous input of 250W.
- use the motor merely as a helper
- helps you go up to 25 kph
Norway’s e-bike laws
Despite not being a member of the EU, Norway complies with certain of its directives. However, the local administration made the decision to expand the law.
E-bikes, for instance, are only permitted on cycling infrastructure like bike lanes and bike parks.
A large fine might result from riding an e-bike on the road or to a shared area. Furthermore, Norway’s maximum assistant speed is just 20kph, compared to the EU’s maximum of 25kph.
What constitutes an unlawful ebike?
The bicycle must have pedals that can move it forward. There must be no throttle on it. Ideally, the rider will be 14 years old or older.
